Changed schools last year and went with the flow since I do so much other different stuff but still had 80% tests (and within that did the standards as ___/10). 20% was classwork/homework. I honestly hated it. I spent so much worthless time on that 20% that I was just marking for completion, which is honestly against my whole theory of grades in the first place. District is moving a little more towards SBG as whole and have others in dept teaching same prep on board so I'm cutting the fluff 20% this year and am SO happy. But as I said, because of the clear communication about what a student doesn't know + the fact that they can retake, I've had no push back. Some students argue initially they don't test well, but I kindly start pushing back with that idea (especially after reading Make it Stick which you should check out if you haven't) that not knowing it on the test means that you don't know the material, you just feel familiar with it. If I ask them to do it outside of the test on their own, they still can't do it - so it's not the test itself it's not having any help or prompts for the first time (versus I try to coach them to being practicing this "retrieval" frequently in class and at home before the test to avoid this issue and ensure better transfer to long term memory). I've had ONE instance on ONE test in 4 years where I do believe test anxiety was to blame. And also with more frequent, short testing the anxiety becomes less of an issue. Correct? Do you give a grade for any classwork or are all grades based on tests? I want to try out SBG but just not sure how parents/students will take the new grading guidelines.Diana Ramseyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18036223529767020620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7032864633365278190.post-34972264381266042152017-07-23T12:55:26.089-04:002017-07-23T12:55:26.089-04:00Great question! So like 4.1 is __/10, 4.3 is ___/10 etc. Let me know if that doesn't make sense. Great point to bring up that I totally forgot to include.Type-A MathLandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12807526814021491836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7032864633365278190.post-19282736660896778172017-07-23T12:11:03.179-04:002017-07-23T12:11:03.179-04:00How do you put your grades in the online gradebook...How do you put your grades in the online gradebook when everyone else using standard grading practices?<br />Diana Ramseyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18036223529767020620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7032864633365278190.post-40838602485167569412017-07-23T08:50:04.642-04:002017-07-23T08:50:04.642-04:00Thank you so much for sharing your insights regard...Thank you so much for sharing your insights regarding SBG! I am planning to take the plunge this year after a couple of years researching about it. I think the most challenging aspect is deciding what the standards will be and how many. Your post gives me some manageable guidelines. I am also the sole teacher of the course this year so I have the freedom to give it a try. Looking forward to your next post.Ladsithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11512304231581037211noreply@blogger.com
